Why Should We Be Talking About Pain During Sex?
Pain during sex is far more common than most people realize, yet it remains hidden behind shame, stigma, and a lack of open conversation. Although dyspareunia can stem from many biological, psychological, and relational factors—and affects people of all genders—the silence surrounding it leaves individuals feeling isolated, dismissed, and confused about what is “normal.” Pain can shape desire, relationships, mental health, and medical experiences, often creating a cycle where fear of judgment or dismissal prevents people from seeking care. By recognizing that sex should not be painful, normalizing conversations about sexual pain, and advocating for better research, education, and clinical support, we can challenge harmful assumptions and make space for more informed, compassionate, and pleasurable sexual experiences.
